Skill 1: Ask Questions That Open Doors
“Do you like your job?” closes a door. “What made you choose that path?” opens one. Ask about motivations, feelings, and meaning rather than just facts.
Skill 2: Listen to Understand, Not to Respond
Real listening means fully absorbing what someone said before formulating any response. The pause from genuine processing is uncomfortable — but deeply attractive.
Skill 3: Remember and Reference
Bring back something from earlier in the conversation. This tells someone they were truly heard — a feeling most people almost never experience.
Skill 4: Share Vulnerably — But Selectively
The sweet spot is offering something genuine — a real fear, a real failure — without turning the conversation into a therapy session.
Skill 5: Use the Person’s Name — But Sparingly
A person’s name is the sweetest sound in any language. Using it once or twice creates warmth. The key is sparingly — overuse feels manipulative.

Written in 1936 and still the most practically useful book on human connection ever published.
Skill 6: Be Genuinely Interested — Or Do Not Engage
Performed interest is obvious. Find something genuinely fascinating about every person. Everyone has a story that would astonish you if you asked the right question.
Every single person you meet knows something you do not, has been somewhere you have not, and has felt something you can learn from.
Skill 7: Know How to End on a High
End conversations before they exhaust themselves. “I have to get back, but I genuinely enjoyed this — let’s continue it” leaves the other person wanting more.
